Australia: Don’t Leave Aussie Business Behind

AUSTRALIA: DON’T LEAVE AUSSIE BUSINESS BEHIND

It is encouraging to see the recently unveiled national Australian logo ‘Only in Australia’ – to jump start much needed trade and investment.

Whilst millions of Aussie dollars thrown behind a new national logo design might appear as a great step forward, we must ensure we do not leave Aussie business owners and manufacturers behind in the process.

Local manufacturing is critical to a modern Australian economy. It is a vital part of Australia’s response to the COVID-19 crisis and is key to almost every supply chain. Transparency in ownership and manufacturing is crucial for sustainable long term growth and to keep investment here.

Too often we see profits meant for Australia, sent offshore with multi‐nationals paying almost no tax. When businesses are genuinely owned by Australians, profits stay here and are invested here. This is integral to our economic growth, creating new jobs and contributing to the long-term prosperity of our great country.

A national, trusted and transparent business ownership certification is crucial if we truly believe in promoting and investing in Australia.

Australian Owned General Manager, Kristy Ponting, said a tick box “claiming Australian ownership” is not enough.

“Australian Owned was founded with a vision to build transparency and trust in the Australian Owned Certified logo for both business and the consumer,” said Ms Ponting.

“The AO logo isn’t a tokentistic stamp of Aussie approval. It’s an official certification. This means that businesses can’t use the logo unless they have gone through our stringent certification process.”

Australian Owned has seen significant and rapid growth since its establishment.  This confirms that ownership and manufacturing matters to the general public and business.

Businesses can apply for their certification via the Australian Owned website.

About Australian Owned:

Australian Owned (AO) was established to promote and support businesses that are owned by Aussies.  This extends to businesses that offer services and to those who manufacture their products right here in Australia. This means profits stay here and are reinvested here, supporting Aussie jobs and growing the economy.

When a business applies for certification, a qualified compliance team breaks down complex company structures and guarantees Australian ownership and manufacturing.

Only businesses with considerable Australian influence are awarded an Australian Owned Certified logo, signifying, and recognising that the Australian economy will benefit by the support of the business/ product bearing the logo.

Products that have the Australian Owned Certified logo on a label or product packaging are proving that their production is ‘significantly Australian’ (materials, ingredients, labour hours etc) and in recognition, have been granted approval, in accordance with the Australian Owned Certification Rules (as lodged with the ACCC), to display the Australian Owned Certified logo.

 The trusted AO logo says:

  • Transparency in ownership and manufacturing
  • Due Diligence
  • Quality Control
  • Quality Compliance Professionals
  • Application Examination
  • Business Operation Evaluation
  • Determination of significant Australian influence in business operations

The 7 words launching Aussie owned businesses to the world

Aussies are innovators at heart.  We see obstacles that need a solution and we don’t shy away from hard work.  This is the Aussie way.  And the Australian Fencing and Agriculture industry is no different.

A group of small-scale manufacturers in Australia have received national and international attention for their innovative products – all designed and made right here in Australia.

Brought together by Woodshield Business Development Manager, Ashley Davidson, these businesses have a common interest: keeping jobs and investment in Australia.  They also share a common logo: the unique Australian Owned Certified logo.

“I’m a proud Aussie owned manufacturer and it was a no brainer to apply for my Australian Owned Certification.  Once I realised there were other businesses in the fencing industry that were officially Australian Owned certified – I had to bring us together,” said Mr Davidson.

“We have all overcome obstacles in our own farming and agriculture businesses and have designed and manufactured new products to find a solution,” said Mr Davidson.

Mr Davidson’s obstacle was to find a replacement to chemically treated timber posts.

“I had to find a product that was strong, durable, easy to use and recyclable. The Wood-Shield Post concept was created and is now a unique patented product.”

James Higgins from James Higgins Rural Fencing is another incredible story from this group of Aussie owned businesses.

“One particular problem common with old fences is loose and sagging wires.  My Australian manufactured fence repair tool solution is the result of trial and error.  Since starting the design process in early 2019, we have tested nine different prototypes in order to arrive at the finished model.

James said that whilst 2020 presented some real curveballs, the one huge benefit was a renewed interest in Australian made and owned products.

“Since getting on board with the Australian Owned team and the group effort started by Ashley Davidson from Woodshield, I’ve noticed a distinct uptick in sales and interest from both domestic and international markets.”

Another fencing invention, the Vini Clip was designed by Ian Western from Plastic Precise Products Co – in response to a need for a wire clip for the vineyard industry that could stand up against extreme temperatures and last the distance.

“In 2009 many large businesses moved offshore for their requirements and Australian manufacturing took a hit. We decided to downsize and focus on a smaller range of products. The Vini-Clip continues to be sold around Australia each year and is iconic in the industry.”

Then there is Walter Fencing.  When asked why they moved into the business of manufacturing equipment, Company Director Stephen Walters replied, “we’ve always engineered and made our own gear to help make fencing as quick and efficient as possible, and we realised if we love our gear so much, other people might too!”

“Our goal is to increase our research and development capabilities to allow us to remain at the cutting edge of innovation in the fencing industry.  We will continue to work with contractors and farmers in an attempt to shape the future of rural fencing in Australia for the better.”

Four other businesses make up this Australian Owned Fencing Group; Wireman HQ, Spiralfast wire joiner, Davo’s Fencing Clip and Fastway Fencing Tie Offs.

This group of fencing and agriculture industry leaders have had enthusiastic endorsements from Australian agriculturalist and educator turned ‘posterboy for fencing’, Tim Thompson.  His promotion of Australian Agriculture has helped boost awareness and promotion of these fencing products through his video reviews.

Australian Owned General Manager Kristy Ponting applauded the Aussie engenuity and collaboration of these businesses.

“Our mission is to support the Australian business community and give businesses the tools to grow and contribute to the long-term prosperity of this country.

“It is so encouraging to see Australian Owned Certified licensees use our strong and growing network to boost Australian industry.

“Long live Aussie manufacturing!”

International Spotlight: Australian Fencing & Agriculture

How industry collaboration launched an international spotlight on Australian fencing and agriculture products…

Collaboration over Competition: A concept that has allowed Aussie farming businesses to enjoy international success and has changed the face of the fencing industry locally.  This is how they did it.

In 2017, Nicole Davidson and her teenage son Jimmy were building a new fence on their family farm in Casterton, Victoria.  After an exhausting day of hammering in fencing staples, they realised there had to be an easier way.  Within an hour – Nicole’s husband, Rod, had designed Davo’s Fencing clip.  A clip that is quicker, easier and stronger than most traditional methods of attaching wire to posts.

After 12 months of research and development Davo’s Fencing Clip launched onto the market.  It was obvious from the get go that the product had huge potential, but the question was how to market effectively with no marketing experience?

Throughout 2019, sales were strong and they could see the demand was high.  Then Covid-19 hit and with no in-person sales events possible, they discovered the power of digital marketing.  In June 2020 the Davidson’s were introduced to Australian agriculturalist and educator turned ‘posterboy for fencing’, Tim Thompson, who released a product review video of their fencing clip.  Sales for Davo’s Fencing Clip skyrocketed with interest from 12 countries from Sweden to Belize, and Canada to India.  Sales have been consistent to the US, the UK and New Zealand.

What makes this success story even better is they are now helping other Aussie businesses achieve the same success. Thanks to a passionate Aussie owned manufacturer, Ashley Davidson from Woodshield, they were connected with seven other small businesses proudly manufacturing innovative fencing products in Australia – a connection made due to their official Australian Owned Certification.

The eight Australian Owned Certified businesses created the Aussie Owned Aussie Made Fencing Group and are now supporting each other’s marketing efforts and collaborating on future product development.  Most importantly, they are wanting to encourage businesses to maintain control of manufacturing and keep jobs and investment in Australia.

“People used to say to me that we should be getting our product made in China so it would be cheaper.  I always rescinded saying that we are manufacturers at heart, not retailers.  Why would we give our jobs away?” said Davo’s Fencing Clip founder, Nicole Davidson.

“We are incredibly grateful for the opportunity to contribute a simple but significant improvement to Fencing and Agriculture around the world.  It has been wonderful working with other small-scale manufacturers in Australia who are just getting on with the job – and most importantly, keeping jobs here in Australia.”

Australian Owned General Manager, Kristy Ponting, was thrilled to see the added licensee benefits of the Australian Owned Certification Program being taken up by these businesses.

“With a network that includes thousands of Australian Owned business owners, we are in the unique position to facilitate introductions.  This service is provided as a means to enable businesses to support each other so that jobs and investments stay here now and for future generations.

“I would love to see more industry collaboration happening across the board. Hopefully the success of this Aussie Owned fencing group will inspire others in our certification program to collaborate and grow their business!”

You might be surprised to know that half of the major milk brands sold in Australia are owned by overseas companies. When you pick up a bottle of cheap milk, the chances are the profits are being sent overseas – to Italy, France and Japan.

Procal Dairies is one of the many Aussie businesses proudly identifying their products as certified Australian Owned. Being officially certified by Australian Owned (“AO”), Procal have used their AO certification and AO logo to better assist the consumer in identifying them as Australian owned.  Their AO logo is predominantly printed on the packaging of their Full Cream and Low Fat Milk cartons.

“We are a proudly owned and operated Australian business,” said Eve Vafiadis, National Sales and Marketing Manager at Procal.

Is Australian Owned on your household budget agenda?

Is Australian Owned on your household budget agenda?

With preference for goods and services that benefit the Australian economy on the rise since covid, many households are looking for switches they can make, to businesses that put their money back into Australian jobs and the Australian economy.

Often hard to navigate is the utilities spend category. New research shows that half of Australians  are not sure if their energy company is Australian owned – or not. When business names and marketing campaigns sometimes implicate strong references to ‘Australia’, it can be hard to keep up with who the truly Australian owned and operated companies are.

The 100% Australian owned and operated energy company, Bright Spark Power, now proudly wears the Australian Owned logo across their customer communications.

CEO of Bright Spark Power, Arran Coughlan said the addition of the “specialised Australian owned certification is a fast way for customers to know where they are spending their money”. He said, “being 100% Australian is a value we hold dear, we have a ‘priority Australian’ procurement policy and where ever we can, we support small, local, Australian businesses.

As reported in MSN, two energy providers connecting a significant number of homes have been owned by Chinese companies for some time – Energy Australia was sold by the NSW government in 2011, and Alinta Energy was sold in 2017.Bright Spark Power is a truly local choice for your electricity supply. They are a 100% Australian owned and operated electricity supplier connecting homes and business across all of NSW and the south east QLD (Energex) region. Bright Spark Power’s contact details can be located in the Australian Owned Business Register here or visit their website for further information www.brightsparkpower.com.au.

Uber Eats… Into Profits.

Yes delivery services like Uber Eats and Deliveroo have changed the way people eat, but it comes at a cost that might be too much for a lot of our restaurants.

When the pandemic hit, Australians were forced to stay at home.  Restaurants across the country closed their doors, some limited their capacity to stay open, and others moved solely to online orders only.  Restaurants had to adjust and delivery became a lifeline.  With many restaurants moving to delivery services for the first time, like them or not, joining these foreign-owned delivery platforms was their way to help drum up more business.

Although these platforms offer a convenient way for customers to order from local restaurants, process relevant payments and organise delivery, restaurant operators are complaining that this ‘convenience’ comes at a considerable cost to their business. For these services, restaurants are charged around 30% per order, which in an industry where profit margins are often razor thin, these fees can wipe out a restaurant’s profits and land them in financial trouble. Unfortunately this is leaving businesses with just two choices: raising prices or closing for good. Both of which are a loss for the customer.

What’s worse is that the 30% commission being taken from our restaurants is void of any tax when it’s paid to a foreign-owned company such as Uber Eats, Deliveroo and Menulog. This means profits and tax from our restaurants are going overseas instead of being invested back into local industry.

The situation is concerning for restaurants, cafes and caterers as rising costs, government imposed restrictions and heavy competition is putting extreme financial pressure on owners.

So what can diners do to help support their local restaurants and keep taxes within Australia?

  • Dining in at your favourite restaurant when possible
  • Contacting the restaurant directly via phone or website to make your order
  • Look for a local delivery business – they’re out there.  Australian Owned Zoom Delivery recently launched and services the northeast of NSW.  With more local entrepreneurs realising this gap in the local delivery market, more choices are sure to come.

Convenience is obviously a strong driver when choosing what and where to eat,  but it is important we understand that restaurants will close if something doesn’t change soon. It’s never been more important to support our Australian restaurants and caterers.
